What are Roman blinds?
Roman blinds are an incredibly popular style of blind that can be controlled via chain or cord with cord lock. They can also be automated if you add a motor when ordering your blinds. Roman blinds are a popular choice for both residential and commercial projects but are most commonly found in kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms. Blinds on the Net offer Roman blinds in light filtering, blockout and sunscreen fabrics. Plus, a stunning range of colours and textures to suit your personal style.
Roman blinds are perfect for those looking for a minimalist and modern aesthetic but also a blind that is a little more of a statement than the common alternative Roller blind. Our Roman blinds are made right here in Australia and fully customisable to suit your functional and interior decor needs.
Roman blinds are also a fantastic way to save money on energy bills due to their insulating nature. Installing Roman blinds onto your bare windows will help create a barrier to keep the warmth in during the colder months and the heat out during the scorching Aussie Summers.
How do Roman blinds work?
Roman blinds look almost flat when closed and consist of a single piece of fabric that has a string cord running through it. When the user opens a Roman blind, the cord is pulled and the fabric folds up into large pleats.
Should I purchase Roman blinds with or without side hems?
Without Side Hem
With Side Hem
If you are looking for a smooth and finished look, Blinds on the Net recommends that you order your custom Australian Made Roman blinds with stitched side hems. Stitched side hems ensure that the material along the edge of your blinds is folded over to create a clean edge. However, you will see a visible hem stitch. If you do not want a visible stitch, opt for ‘no side hems’ as the material is simple cut and left without a hem. Although we treat the edge to prevent fraying, we cannot guarantee that Roman blinds without a side hem will not fray over time.
How do I ensure my Roman blind is a full blockout blind?
When you customise your Australian Made Roman blind, be sure to select a blockout fabric and add the optional Aluminium Back Baton to ensure your Roman blinds are completely blockout. When customising your Roman blind pocket fold finish, you will be given 2 options, 1. sewn pocket and 2. Aluminium back batton. If you select a sewn in pocket fold finish, you will opt for letting in a small pinhole of light where the fabric stitching is at each fold of the Roman blind (not normally a concern if the fabric is a light filtering or screen fabric). Whereas, a blockout Roman blind with Aluminium back battens will be far superior in blocking out light because it will have no stitching in the pockets and therefore will not let in any light at the folds of the blind. Please note, the Aluminium back batons will incur a surcharge.

Which is the best Roller or Roman blind?
Roman blind
Roller blind
Roman blinds and Roller blinds are both fantastic window furnishings. The key difference is the finished look when fully open. Roller blinds will roll back almost all the way with only the roller and bottom rail showing at the top of the window. Whereas a Roman blind will fold back to show one whole panel of the pleated fabric when open completely. Roman blinds also require you to stop at stages due to the folded nature of the blind, whereas you can stop your roller at any point when opening or closing your blind. In saying this, Roman blinds have a stunning aesthetic and are a little more of a feature for your room compared to the more simple Roller blind aesthetic. Roman blinds can quite often “dress” the top of your window but will take up approx 30-35cm when pulled fully up. For this reason, many people fit Roman Blinds to the wall space above the window (ideally 30-35cm above the window or architrave).
What are the benefits of Roman blinds?
Roman blinds have many benefits including having the ability to create a minimalist feature in your room, have the ability to either filter or blockout light completely you may still get light bleeding through from the back depending on how you fit the blind - face fitting and making the blind wider than your window will give the most amount of light blockage) and also to reduce your energy bills due to giving your rooms increased insulation. At Blinds on the Net, our Roman blinds are completely customtomiseable and also made in Australia. So, they are very high quality and have the ability to be installed to windows that may not be a standard size. Motorising your Roman blinds can also give you added convenience and safety with the removal of cords or chains that may risk pets and children’s safety.
