History of Roller blinds.

Roller blinds are incredibly popular throughout Australian homes and businesses due to their practicality and versatility.

Though they have been adorning our homes for over 2 centuries, Roller blinds have stood the test of time developing alongside current trends and home aesthetics while constantly keeping up to date in technology and transforming with the modern lifestyle. Reinvigorated over the last century, the roller blind was the answer to a simple/sleek, modern and versatile window alternative - they’ve been popular in our homes ever since.

Roller blinds are versatile, practical and affordable.

Because of the high demand and sheer volume of blinds being made today, competition has seen Roller blinds become cheaper and cheaper. The simplicity of the Roller blind design allows companies like us here at Blinds on the Net to offer a massive range of fabrics, textures and colours at a relatively low cost. This, combined with increased competition in the market means that our customers can get access to stunning Australian made window furnishings at a very affordable price. The wide array of fabrics that are available is a prime reason why Roller blinds are so popular.

They can be customised for any decor layout and adapted to suit any style of home. Not to mention they’re low maintenance and easy to clean! Roller Blinds are low fuss with a simple aesthetic and great affordability - much like the desired modern minimalist Australian home. They are by far our best-selling blind because of these qualities.

Are Roller blinds suitable for everyone?

Roller blinds are well suited for apartments and homes with minimal space due to their slimline appearance and versatility. However, they can also be just as great looking and functional in large spaces and commercial buildings for this exact same reason. They are adjustable to any size of window - large or small. Their ability to roll up completely for people to enjoy the view outside and roll down flat against the window makes Roller blinds a popular choice for people wanting a slimline and clean aesthetic.

Roller blinds are a great choice for people looking for increased insulation in their home due to the minimal gaps between the fabric and window ensuring that light and outside air can’t penetrate into your interior environment. Thus, saving on energy bills and increasing your ability to control the level of privacy you have. Roller blinds are particularly popular for people searching for bedroom blinds. Rollers ensure you can have a peaceful slumber with minimal disturbances due to noise and sunlight. They are also a fantastic choice for the loungeroom and those looking to have Netflix binge sessions without the light reflecting off the TV.

Roller blinds continue to have technological advancements.

Roller blinds have also had some technological advancements in more recent years with the Double Roller blind (otherwise known as Dual Roller blinds or Day/Night Roller blinds), allowing Roller blinds to have even more versatility due to their specialised brackets being able to house 2 Roller blinds on the one bracket. This exciting advancement allows you to have a light filtering or screen fabric on one or the rollers and then a blockout on the other - ensuring total control over privacy and light at any time of the day! You no longer have to choose between a blockout of screen/light filtering fabric - you can now get the best of both worlds.

Roller blinds are the modern, affordable choice.

Whether you want to use roller blinds as an unassuming blank canvas for your space, a feature to accentuate your style with a pop of printed fabric, or set a classic tonal backdrop - roller blinds are a modern and affordable choice for homeowners, builders, designers, commercial renovators... Well, everyone actually!

Roller blinds are available in blockout, translucent and sunscreen fabrics. To find out the difference between these materials and the benefits they have to offer your home follow below.

When choosing your screen blind, it is recommended that lighter colours offer the best light and heat reflection but darker shades minimise glare and maximise your view outside.

How to choose the best Roller blind fabric.

As mentioned, Roller blinds are incredibly versatile and our Australian custom made Roller blinds are customisable enough to suit any home or business with any decor or privacy needs. Part of the reason why our custom made Roller blinds are so versatile is due to the huge array of fabrics, colours and textures available thanks to the design and structure of the Roller blind. Choosing the right fabric for you is very important.

Choosing a fabric will come down to personal style preference but also practicality. For example, we do not recommend purchasing a textured fabric for the bathroom as this will increase your risk of mould. It is particularly important to understand the various different types of fabric transparencies and how they will impact the availability of light and privacy for your space.

The fabrics available at Blinds on the Net are made with high quality fabrics, are cost effective and specially tested to meet the very specific needs of the Australian climate. Read on to learn more about the various types of Roller blind fabrics available at Blinds on the Net.

What is a Blockout Roller blind?

The Blockout blind has a significant historical background, originating from its use during World War II to protect cities and towns from being targeted at night. Families utilised blockout blinds on their windows to prevent any light that could expose their location. Over time, the purpose of blockout blinds shifted from preventing light from escaping to preventing light from entering homes. Additionally, they serve the function of regulating temperature by blocking hot or cold air, depending on the season.

The unique properties of this fabric make it an excellent companion for Roller blinds, especially for those seeking complete privacy and room darkening. It is important to note that most blockout fabrics feature a white backing, which enhances light reflection. However, it can surprise customers who order a dark back roll blind, as the white backing becomes visible when rolled up. To avoid this, we recommend ordering a front roll blind. Nevertheless, it is crucial to be aware that front roll blinds mounted outside will have a slight gap between the window and the fabric, allowing some light to enter the room.
Due to the thickness of blockout fabric and its white backing, it also acts as an effective sound dampener. Therefore, Blockout Roller blinds are highly popular in bedrooms, as they not only ensure darkness but also reduce external noise at night. Furthermore, these blinds provide superior insulation compared to screen or translucent blinds. Combining blockout blinds with a screen or translucent fabric in a Double Roller offers the best of both worlds: privacy, insulation, and precise light control.
Blinds on the Net offers an impressive collection of blockout blinds, featuring a wide range of colours from light to dark, along with stunning textures.

What is a Translucent or Light Filtering Roller blind?

The easiest way to describe Translucent or Light Filtering Roller blind fabric is to compare it to frosted glass. It is opaque but still lets in the sunlight; and while you may be able to see a slight shadow or outline, it offers complete privacy during the day and night. With this increased privacy, it does completely block out the view and therefore is not suitable for someone who wants to enjoy a seaview, watch their kids in the backyard or deeply keep an eye on what's going on outside.

The slight glow of light is able to seep through due to the composition of the fabric and its tightly woven material. This type of material used and the nature of its construction does mean that it is less sturdy than the screen fabric. However, this may not be a factor if you are looking for privacy both during the day and night (without the need of a Double Roller blind) and don’t mind having a blocked view.

Blinds on the Net recommends that you purchase a lighter coloured Translucent blind if you want to keep your space as brightly lit with natural light as possible. However, we recommend a darker shade of blind for bedrooms and theatre rooms as it will absorb more light and heat.

Translucent and Light Filtering fabrics are best suited to rooms with good ventilation to prevent mould and mildew. They are not as easy to clean as screen blinds, so you must be careful to look at the fabric composition to ensure that the light filtering blinds are suitable for the bathroom and laundry. The dining room and loungeroom are popular areas to place a translucent or light filtering Roller blind.

What is a Screen Roller blind?

Screen Roller blind fabrics (otherwise known as Sunscreen fabrics) are a robust fabric that is often used for exterior blinds and awnings. However, they can also be used on your interior Roller blinds. They are particularly useful in conjunction with a blockout fabric on a Double Roller blind.

Screen fabrics are manufactured by utilising a sturdy material that is loosely weaved together so that you can partially see through the fabric when hung on your window. Therefore, the product is not only durable but has the ability to filter sunlight throughout the day. They are incredibly practical thanks to the use of PVC fibreglass or polyester ensuring an easy cleaning process.

Screen fabric is best known for its ability to create optimal shading on exterior Roller blinds and internal Roller blinds that do not face the street front or are relatively private. This is due to the fact that whilst the screen fabric allows for complete privacy during the day, it does not offer privacy at night when an interior light is on. The benefit of a screen fabric is that it allows you to have a view of your garden during the day, while still protecting your furniture and floors from the harsh Australian sun’s UV rays. With 80-90% UV protection, this fabric is perfect for rooms that directly face the sun and for those customers looking to insulate their home and prevent their furniture and floors from fading over time. Screen blinds also offer optimal privacy during the day. So, if privacy at night is not an issue, then a screen blind is the perfect choice.

Inside Recess Mount and Outside Face Mount Roller blinds

Once you have decided on the right Roller Blind for your room, there are two different ways it can be installed/attached. This will affect the way you measure your windows before ordering your blinds online:

What are Inside Recess Mount Roller blinds?

Otherwise known as a recess mount or reveal, Inside Mount is when the Roller blind is hung inside the window frame. This type of installation looks streamline and is beautiful for deep windows or bench seats but it may let a sliver of light through due to the roller blind accommodating brackets on either side. This does not apply to cellular and aluminium venetian blinds as the bracket is inbuilt overhead if you’d still like to take up this fitting option in another window furnishing style.

For this particular mount, make sure you have no obstructions inside the window frame that will get in the way of operating the blind - such as window winders, handles, keys or locks - otherwise outside mounting to your wall or architrave may be a more functional option. If a small amount of light is not a problem, this is a great preference.

For a measuring guide “how to” for inside mounting your blind, follow our special measuring guide here.

What are Outside Face Mount Roller blinds?

This fitting choice (also known as face mount) is when the Roller blind is attached to the top of the window frame itself or the wall above on the outside of the window. It is forgiving when it comes to less precise measurements as the blind simply overlaps the window frame - so it’s great for first time DIYers who are worried about measuring correctly. Functionally, this fitting style works well in tandem with a back roll blockout blind to ensure it keeps out all of the light, therefore it’s often utilised in bedrooms or multimedia rooms. Outside mounts are flexible - practically and stylistically and can go anywhere in the home. They also give you the choice of a valance to keep both the mechanics safe and generate a beautiful aesthetic. Read more about Valances below.

For a measuring guide “how to” for outside mounting your blind, follow our special measuring guide here.

How do I know which mount will best suit my room?

The honest answer is personal preference - as to how you want the blind to both perform and look. Research some inspiration for blinds and decors and find the style you like with the benefits you need.

In regards to installing both your inside and outside mount Roller blinds, please note that Blinds on the Net does not supply the screws to install our products. This is due to the fact we are unable to predict what material you will be installing your Roller blinds into (i.e wooden window frames, plaster etc). If you go to your local hardware store, just let them know what you are installing your blinds into and they will get the right screws for you. We also have a screws guide alongside our installation instructions here.

Roller blind fabric roll.

There are two types of rolls that can be selected when you order your blinds from us. The type of fabric roll that you choose will depend on the mount you have decided upon. A roll direction can be a game changer in the functionality of your Roller blinds - so take your time and read the information below.

Front roll Roller blinds.

A front roll specifies when the fabric from the roll comes off the front of the tube, so the tube is hidden when looking out of the window - just like a waterfall. When choosing a front roll it’s important to consider:

In recess/inside mount applications a front roll assists in allowing a little extra margin for clearing window handles and can sit well within the frame. Inside mounts do tend to have a a little gaps of light no matter how closely measured they are, and similarly front rolls may also let a little bit of light in within the window frame. If this is not an issue, and you’d like to show off your beautiful window frames it may be an option for you.

When a front roll is ordered with an outside mount, the fabric roll will not sit as close to the window and will create gaps. This will have the opposite effect and create dead space between the blind and the window frame (which could potentially let light in). These larger gaps are not an issue in all instances but may not be ideal for bedrooms or multimedia rooms where you want total room darkness.

People often choose front rolls because they don’t want the bulky appearance of the fabric roll, are not looking for 100% blockout qualities or because they have handles on their or wind out mechanisms that need extra space. Always consider how you want your blinds to perform as well as look.

Back roll Roller blinds.

A back roll is the most popular way of having a fabric hang off a Roller blind tube. A back roll is when the fabric rolls towards the window and the fabric tube shows when looking at your blind from the interior room. In both mount applications the blind sits close to the window or wall reducing unwanted hints of light that a front roll may permit - plus it can improve insulation.

For a recess/ inside mount blind, the fabric is kept close to the window with a back roll. This provides for better insulation but may be problematic if the blind is so close it interferes with window handles or hinges. Blinds on the Net recommends that you either mount your back roll blind further forward within the recess or order a front roll to solve this problem. A back roll will provide excess heat or light penetration but the Inside Mount will still allow a crack of light on each side of the window frame.

A back roll used in conjunction with an outside mount keeps the fabric close to the wall. This provides the best heat and light reflection resulting in better insulation and premium room darkening capabilities. None of those sneaky rays of sunshine or little cracks of light will bother you during an afternoon movie or midday nap. Back rolls are superior when it comes to darkening your room so are often used with blockout fabrics in this context for the best light protection.

Back rolls are commonly used, very functional and widely chosen - depending on the requirements of your windows. A valance is an elegant way to disguise a fabric roll should you not find both the function and aesthetic you are looking for. For more information on Valances read below.

What is a Roller blind valance?

A valance is the overhead fabric or headboard attached to the wall over the top of a blind or curtain. You may have seen one before in older style or more traditional homes, but valances are making a comeback and have been reinvented as a stylish addition for modern day homes. They add a finished touch to the look of your windows whether your blinds or curtains are open or closed and hide the mechanics and brackets of your Roller blinds. Also known as a Pelmet in the UK, valances are designed for both aesthetic purposes and to protect the mechanics and hardware of your Roller blind.

A valance for blinds is often a fixed box around the top brackets of the blind. The box makes room for the roll mechanism and can be customised in your choice of fabric to match your blind and room decor. A valance will add that finishing touch you’ve been waiting for.

Roller blind bottom rails.

How do I choose a Roller blind bottom rail?

The bottom rail refers to the rail at the end of a roller blind. It helps to hold the blind down and give it structure. A good bottom rail can change the look of a blind and add a certain finesse with a clean finish.

Sometimes one or two particular designs will be available for any of our chosen blind because of the functionality of its particular fabric. We have three different types of bottom rails to choose from:

Oval bottom rail.

The oval bottom rail is a modern classic. While it is a more traditional shape, it still looks neater than the previously popular round rail which tends to be regarded as bulky and outdated now.

D-rail.

The candid and clever name for this bottom rail refers to the “D” shape of the rail from its profile view, hence the D-rail. The flat part of the D sits against the window while the front appears curved for the front viewer. This weightier option is uber modern, fresh and stylish. It is commonly installed by builders and homeowners in new homes. An added bonus of the D Rail is that it also possesses a noise reduction bumper on the back.

Bottom pocket.

This design sees the fabric of the Roller blind wrap around and under an interior metal rail. It can give the illusion of the blind appearing longer, and give it a timeless look rather than being locked into modern conventions. A clever option for bump protection and noise reduction, it reduces tapping of the blind against the window and protects it. The bottom pocket design is only available on select fabric and blind makes.

How do I reduce the tapping sound a Roller blind can make when my windows are open?

It’s important to choose the right bottom rail to accent/match your home. With our extensive range of quality products, you know you’re in good hands here at Blinds on the Net. We offer a great variety allowing you to customise your order and find your perfect fit.
A very minor but common issue around roller blinds is the ‘tapping’ sound the bottom rail tends to make in the breeze when windows or doors are open. This can easily be negated with our blind accessory The Force - attach it to the bottom rail to stop banging blinds.

Keep your Roller blinds down and let the cool summer breeze in - while maintaining privacy, room darkening and keeping your home protected from the sun. It allows fresh air to circulate with it’s clever technology using magnets, without the need for fiddly clips or constant readjustment. The force can be fitted to any recess or face mount and is a breakthrough for the blind industry.

What are the different ways I can operate my Roller blind?

Chain operated Roller blinds.

Chain drive operation is the cheapest and most common way to control your Roller blinds. The easy to operate system works by simply pulling the chain (in one direction) with your fingers manually. You may have seen them in many homes before.

Both our brackets and chains at Blinds on the Net are constructed from high quality materials made for everyday use. Rather than some other cheaply made mechanisms that will break or cause annoyance in the first few weeks, our blinds are made for the everyday Australian lifestyle and comply with Australian Safety standards.

Or if you have old blinds and can’t currently afford to buy new blinds or upgrade them to motorised blinds, we offer a range of child safety devices to upgrade your pre existing/current blinds.

Many people worry about chain operation when it comes to safety, especially those with families, pets and small children. Our products here at Blinds on the net are made in accordance with industry standards so you can take comfort in the fact our products are made to the highest standard and with absolute care. As a family owned, operated and run business we will only supply you with products that our family themselves would use and we are tried and tested and believe in our products safety.

Motorised Roller blinds.

Not just for the smart homes of the future - motorised Roller blinds are seamless in becoming a part of our day-to-day lives as they provide exceptional convenience, can prolong the life of your blinds, and are the best child safe alternative. Increasing in popularity over recent years, they are excellent for those with limited mobility or low strength, so they aren’t just for the tech savvy but all ages and all homes. Motorised Roller blinds can be operated remotely which has many benefits from keeping your home cool while you’re at work to making it look like you’re still home while on family vacation. They are also great for big windows with large blinds for precision control or simply to add a dash of luxury at the touch of a button.

Depending on the type of motor you install, motorised blinds can even be controlled from your very own smart phone! At blinds on the net we also supply Somfy Home Automate Hubs and Automate Home Automation Hubs that can work in conjunction with your motorised blinds and other parts of your home (such as lights) to offer a seamless lifestyle. For more information head to our motorised blinds page.

Spring assist Roller blinds.

What are spring assist Roller blinds?

For blinds that are over 2000mm, we offer our spring assist technology upgrade completely FREE of charge. This will allow you to effortlessly open and close your blinds without overextending or forcing big and heavy blinds up and down everyday. Spring assist offers ease of use as well as prolongs the life of your blind, and helps those with limited mobility or strength to comfortably adjust blinds in their home. It is suitable for motorised and chain drive blinds.

How does a spring assist work?

Spring assist is an internal attachment that sits inside the fabric roll itself. The spring is contained by an appropriately sized PVC tube and connected to the control mechanism on the inside. As you roll the blind down the spring becomes loaded and takes part of the pressure of the weight of the blind. The tension in the spring will assist you in rolling the blind back up. This invisible technology has been available for less than a decade and it makes a world of difference.

Why is apring assist necessary on larger blinds?

Some fabrics (such as blockout) can be quite heavy. Combined with the friction of the blind mechanics means when blinds are lowered - they may be hard to roll back up! Once a blind gets to a particular size, it’s weight can become too heavy to run smoothly, which is why we offer spring assist free of charge for particularly large blind sizes. It also takes the stress off the control mechanism when the blind is static and unrolled halfway or all the way down. This will lengthen the life of your control mechanism and is an affordable way to add practical features to your blinds.

If you’d like to know more about our spring assist system feel free to call our professional customer service team on 1800 355 104. They are extremely knowledgeable and known for their friendly customer service.

Double Roller blinds

What are Double Roller blinds?

Double Roller blinds, also knows as Dual Roller blinds or Day/Night blinds, are an incredible way to enhance your room. They give you the ultimate control when it comes to lighting, privacy and insulation transforming your space during all hours of the day and night. With Double Roller blinds, you get the best of both worlds - two materials of your choosing are constructed on special double brackets giving you the option of two different blinds. This means there are endless possibilities with our extensive range of fabrics to give you an edge in adjusting your space to suit your daily lifestyle.

Double Roller blinds are usually made with a blockout and a screen material for example. This allows you to enjoy the sunshine while protecting your view during the day, and give your family privacy and insulation during the night - which singularly/on it’s own just one of these blinds would be unable to do to the extent of all these benefits. As roller blinds only have an up and down motion and this can sometimes limit the function of your window/furnishings, dual roller blinds are the answer to enhancing your space with style and practicality.

Order your FREE samples to test our beautiful materials and choose which combination of fabrics are right for you. If you have any question about Double Roller blinds free call one of our friendly customer service team on 1800 355 104.

Everything you need to know to help you customise your Double Roller blinds.

Thinking of installing Double Roller blinds for that extra practicality and flair? Dual roller blinds use a special double bracket to offer you a choice between two different styles of fabrics and give you the ultimate control when it comes to transforming your space during both day and night. They are a versatile and practical addition to any home.

What brackets do I need and should I inside or outside mount my Double Roller blinds?

You will be given the choice of a standard bracket or slimline bracket when purchasing Double Roller blinds. A standard bracket requires approx 140 - 150mm (for longer blinds) clearance if you decide to inside mount your blinds. If you choose a Slimline bracket, this only requires approx 100mm clearance if you have an inside mount blind and is usually more suited to this type of mount.

Where should I place my blockout blind vs screen/light filtering blind when purchasing a Double Roller blind?

If you are purchasing a Double Roller blind with a combination of blockout and screen/light filtering Roller blinds, we recommend selecting the screen/light filtering fabric for you outside blind (located closest to the window) and the blockout for your inside blind (facing your room) to ensure maximum light blockout.

What roll should I choose when customising my Double Roller blind?

If you have chosen a standard bracket, the room side and window side blinds can be either front or back roll.

If you have chosen a slimline bracket, the room side blind must be front roll and the window side blind must be back roll.

How do I choose my control side when customising my Double Roller blind?

If you have selected standard brackets when customising your Double Roller blind, you will get the choice of the following: All Left controlled, all Right controlled or opposite sides. If you choose all left control or all right control you will operate both your blinds on either the Left or Right side. If you choose the opposite, one blind will operate on the right hand side and one will operate on the Left.

If you select a slimline bracket, you do not get the choice to have you blinds operated on opposite sides, you will need to choose either Left controlled or Right controlled.

The main thing to consider when choosing what side you control your blinds is purely convenience and access. What side is the easiest for you to access? If you motorise your blind, the motor will be installed on the control side. So, please select the side that is easiest to access for charging wirefree motors. For hardwired motors, please select the side of your window which is easiest to get power to and consult an electrician before purchasing.
